Part of each island chapter is devoted to enabling readers to brief themselves on the nature of the island—its geography, history, culture—and even keen divers have dry time: boogying until dawn, shopping, hiking, golf or just plain chilling out.

Find out what to expect from each island's shoreside facilities. We describe the facilities for golf, hiking, horse riding, tennis, water sports, shoppping and nightlife. Below is an example page  taken from the Martinique chapter.

Martinique

The Southeast:

Ste. Anne

Towards the eastern end of the south coast, the land becomes more elevated and a hill slopes down to a large protected indentation called Cul-de-Sac Marin. This is the centre of yachting in Martinique, with a large marina and many charter companies.

Ste. Anne is a picturesque small waterfront town with a pleasant, laid back holiday atmosphere just outside the Cul-de-Sac. From here around to the southern shore perfect white sand beaches lie between low cliffy headlands. There are even more lovely beaches on the windward shore, a few miles hike over the hills.

Hotels and restaurants are spread along the coast, including a Club Med. Essentials are available in supermarkets and one or two souvenir shops will supply sunblock and hats. Not much happens here at night unless you are in one of the larger hotels which have their own evening activities.

Après Dive One of the advantages in staying on an island like Martinique with a well established tourist industry is that you can be sure of every entertainment and amenity.
Golf The village of Trois Ilets, not far from Anse Mitan, has an excellent 18-hole golf course that takes you around rolling hills with views out over the water.

Hiking There are excellent well-marked trails all over Martinique, which are maintained by the government. Several books with maps and colour photos have been written about these walks. They are available at nearly any shop catering to tourists. You can also walk into the Fort de France Tourist office and ask for a map and get them to mark the starting points of some of the trails for you. When you arrive at the starting point there is always a large notice board with a trail map showing distances. The easiest way to get to the beginnings of the trails is to rent a car.

Day excursions are big business in Martinique and are available through most hotels and travel offices.

Horse Riding There are plenty of stables happy to take you riding. For the most part these are in the southern part of Martinique, from Anse Mitan round to St. Anne.
